How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session

← back to blog

Your engagement session is more than just photos – it’s about capturing you as you are, in places that feel like you. My approach is relaxed, intentional, and rooted in documenting real connection in meaningful environments. This guide will walk you through exactly how to prepare so we can create timeless, authentic images together.

Choose Locations That Feel Like Home

I believe the most powerful images happen when you’re in your element. That means choosing locations that reflect your story – places you love, spend time in, or feel drawn to. Whether that’s wandering through places that you love, grabbing a drink downtown, or escaping to the mountains, your session should feel natural and personal.

I typically recommend:

  • Two distinct locations, or
  • One location with two visual variants (for example: architecture + nature, urban + open space)

This gives us variety while still keeping the session cohesive and relaxed.

Favourite Engagement Session Locations Near Edmonton

Some of my go-to locations around Edmonton include:

  • The Leg Grounds – Architecture, beautiful manicured gardens, and a fountain in the summer
  • McNally High School – A beautiful lookout over the river valley and downtown and nature trails
  • University of Alberta Area – A beautiful mix of classic architecture and greenery
  • The Government House – A gorgeous building with some gardend and usually less crowded than the Leg Grounds
  • Little HK – Elevated Speakeasy great for some cozy photos with cocktails

Beyond the City: Alberta Locations I Love

If you’re up for a little adventure, these spots are absolutely worth it:

  • Nordegg, Alberta – Rugged landscapes, winding roads, mountains, a lake and rivers perfect for couples who love the outdoors
  • Peyto Lake – Dramatic views, forests, and alpine backdrops
  • Banff & Canmore Area – Iconic mountain scenery with endless location options
  • Jasper – Gorgeous mountain views with amazing locations

Traveling for your engagement session allows us to slow down, explore, and create images that feel cinematic and deeply personal.

What to Wear: Outfit Planning Made Easy

You’re welcome to bring two outfits to your engagement session. I recommend:

  • One outfit that feels more elevated or classic
  • One outfit that feels relaxed and true to your everyday style

Think movement, texture, and comfort – clothing that allows you to interact naturally with each other while still feeling comfortable and

Client Closet Access

You’ll also have access to my client closet, which includes thoughtfully curated pieces that photograph beautifully and complement my editing style. If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m always happy to help you plan outfits that feel like you and photograph timelessly.

Hair & Makeup: Plan Your Trial the Same Day

If you’re planning to have professional makeup for your wedding, I highly recommend scheduling your makeup trial on the same day as your engagement session.

This serves two purposes:

  • You’ll see exactly how your makeup photographs
  • You’ll feel confident and comfortable knowing what you love (or want to adjust) for the wedding day

It’s a practical step that makes your engagement photos even more polished while checking something important off your wedding to-do list.

Timing & What to Expect

Engagement sessions typically last 1.5–2 hours. This allows plenty of time to:

  • Ease into the session
  • Move between locations
  • Change outfits
  • Capture both candid moments and lightly guided portraits

There’s no rush. I’ll guide you throughout the session so nothing ever feels awkward or forced. Most couples tell me it feels more like a date than a photoshoot – which is exactly the goal.

Include the Things You Love

Your engagement session is the perfect opportunity to incorporate the things that make your relationship yours. That might look like:

  • Coffee or cocktails at your favourite spot
  • Including your dog, horses or other animals
  • Exploring a trail you love
  • A shared hobby or activity

These details help tell your story in a way that feels genuine and meaningful – and they’re often what make your images feel timeless years from now.

I am so excited to document your engagement session

Your engagement session is about connection, not perfection. Together, we’ll create images that feel honest, emotional, and deeply reflective of your relationship – set against some of the most beautiful locations Edmonton and Alberta have to offer.

If you’re ever unsure about locations, outfits, or planning details, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

I can’t wait to document this season for you.
